What happened to 50 Paise?

Do we actually know what happened to '50 paise' ???

Suddenly in Bengal people are refusing 50 paise though they don't know why they are doing this. From shopkeepers to traders, any stores, vegetable market, even beggars are not accepting 50 paise. If the price of anything is like 40.50 or 25.50 rupees or like that then sellers are giving a lolipop as 50 paise though when buyers are doing the same they are refusing. Does this make any sense??

All the people know that 50 paise is legal and it is used in 'Ferries of the Ganges' but in the market it has no value virtually.
